A Winter Visit

Yesterday we got together with a friend we hadn't seen for a while and shared some time together on the Bow River. The Forecast called for 9 C, but after spending an hour fishing in the water our cold feet told us otherwise. My Olympic mitts came in handy and we caught a number of rainbows but we spent more time sharing life stories on the big ice shelves above the river than bobber chucking. Guess which part of the day I enjoyed more? I think the guys I was with would likely feel the same way. It's not always about the fishing:)

I relish the opportunity to reply to comments such as this. TUC did a study that showed no effect on the fish, and virtually every condition is in the fish' favour presently. There is little to demonstrate that angling in the Bow R this time of the year is going to impact anything. With trout's ability to migrate 10km+ in a day, it is extremely difficult for one to fish near Policeman's and make comment on anyone angling at the Highwood or below Mack when ice sheds. Fish move. Further, to ban fishing for sensitive moments in a fish's life cycle would preclude fishing the entire salmon and steelhead runs, and alpine lakes altogether, while essentially leaving about 3 or 4 weeks of allowable angling each season. Angling is enjoyable, perhaps the annonymous poster needs to get out and enjoy a little fishing during this wonderful weather of the week rather than focus on the negative. There's some great fly fishing to enjoy this time of the year - have fun with it! It's a tremendous opportunity to enjoy slower times of the year with friends, which is the best part of fly fishing sometimes. Get out and invite a friend. :)
